In 2020, the answer to "how do I get more customers from search" was one word: Google. In 2026, it's four: Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Together those four handle over a third of all search-style questions in North America, and the way they pick which businesses to mention is completely different from classic SEO. Here's what changed and what to do about it.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is how you win at the old game — get your page to show up as a blue link on Google's results page so the searcher clicks through to your site. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is how you win at the new game — get your business mentioned inside the AI-generated answer itself, so when someone asks ChatGPT "who's the best pediatric dentist in Bethesda," your name comes out of the AI's mouth. Same goal (get discovered), completely different mechanics.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews all work roughly the same way when they answer a question:
Every step in that pipeline is an opportunity. If your site is invisible to their crawlers, gets zero credibility signals, or is written in a way the AI can't easily extract, you're never getting picked — no matter how good your service is.
The single most common GEO failure we see: sites accidentally block the AI bots. Your robots.txt file (at yoursite.com/robots.txt) tells crawlers what they're allowed to access. Cloudflare, WordPress security plugins, and Squarespace's default settings all sometimes block:
GPTBot (OpenAI / ChatGPT)ClaudeBot (Anthropic / Claude)PerplexityBot (Perplexity)Google-Extended (Gemini and AI Overviews)Applebot-Extended (Apple Intelligence)CCBot (Common Crawl, feeds many models)Check your robots.txt right now. If any of those crawlers are listed under Disallow: /, you are invisible to that AI. Fix: add explicit Allow: / rules for each user-agent you want to reach.
Schema is a structured data format that tells AI engines exactly what your page is about, in a machine-friendly way. The three most valuable schemas for small businesses:
A page with FAQPage schema is 3-5x more likely to be quoted by an AI engine than the same content without it. Free JSON-LD generators (search "schema generator") turn your existing content into markup in under 5 minutes per page.
AI engines pull short, self-contained answers into their output. Content that's easy to quote wins. Content that isn't, loses. Practical rules:
FAQ pages are AI catnip. Every question is a self-contained mini-answer, marked up with FAQPage schema, at exactly the granularity AI engines like to quote. Even a modest 10-question FAQ with schema often becomes a site's most-cited page in ChatGPT and Perplexity within a couple of weeks. Cover:
AI engines heavily favor sources they can verify. Give them things to verify:
AI engines fetch your homepage first, and use it to decide what your business does. If your homepage headline is "Welcome!" or "Passion. Purpose. Performance." then congratulations, you've told the AI nothing. Fix: your H1 should include your specialty and your location in plain words. "Pediatric occupational therapy in Bethesda MD." Boring? Yes. Effective? Enormously.
SEO gives you tools like Google Search Console and rank trackers. GEO is newer and murkier, but you can still test:
Do these things in this order and you'll have a defensible GEO position by month three:
GEO isn't a replacement for SEO, and SEO isn't going away. The businesses that win from 2026 forward will do both — classic SEO for traffic from Google's blue links, GEO for citations inside AI-generated answers. Skip either half and you're leaving customers on the table.
